The nub theory is a gender prediction method based on the angle of the genital tubercle (the "nub") visible on an ultrasound scan between 11 and 14 weeks of pregnancy. Before external genitalia develop, all embryos have a genital tubercle that will eventually become either a penis or clitoris. The nub theory claims you can predict which way it will go based on the angle.
The rule of thumb: If the nub points up at an angle greater than 30 degrees relative to the spine, it's likely a boy. If it points more horizontally (less than 30 degrees), it's likely a girl.

The nub theory is based on the observation that by 11-14 weeks, the genital tubercle begins to differentiate:
- Boy (male): The tubercle angles upward -- typically greater than 30 degrees from the horizontal spine line.
- Girl (female): The tubercle stays more parallel to the spine -- typically less than 30 degrees.
This theory has some anatomical basis. In male fetuses, testosterone causes the genital tubercle to elongate and angle upward, eventually forming the penis. In female fetuses, the tubercle stays in a more horizontal position and develops into the clitoris.
When Can You Use Nub Theory?
The nub theory is most reliable between 12 and 14 weeks of pregnancy. Key timing factors:
- Before 11 weeks: The nub looks the same in both sexes. Too early.
- 11-12 weeks: Differentiation begins. Possible but less reliable.
- 12-14 weeks: The "sweet spot." The nub is developed enough to show angle differences.
- After 14 weeks: External genitalia are forming. You might as well wait for the anatomy scan.
How Accurate Is the Nub Theory?
Unlike some other gender prediction methods, the nub theory has been the subject of actual medical research. Here's what the studies found:
- A 2011 study in the Australian Journal of Ultrasound in Medicine found 70-85% accuracy at 12 weeks when assessed by experienced sonographers.
- A 2016 study reported 91% accuracy at 13 weeks -- but only when the nub was clearly visible and measured correctly.
- Accuracy drops significantly if the image quality is poor, the fetus is in the wrong position, or the person interpreting the image is inexperienced.
While these numbers are much higher than random chance (50%), they still mean roughly 1 in 10 to 1 in 4 predictions would be wrong. This is not a medical diagnosis.
How to Spot the Nub on Your Ultrasound
- Get a profile view -- the fetus needs to be seen from the side. Crown-to-rump measurements are usually taken from this angle.
- Find the spine -- look for the curved line of the back.
- Look near the base -- the nub is a small protrusion at the lower end of the spine, between the legs.
- Measure the angle -- imagine a line along the spine and a line through the nub. If the angle between them is more than 30 degrees, nub theory says boy.
Important: Not all 12-week scans capture a clear nub view. The fetus needs to be in the right position, and many ultrasound technicians don't specifically image the nub area as part of routine scans.
