When Can You Find Out Your Baby's Gender?
Wondering when you can find out if it's a boy or girl? Here is the week-by-week timeline of every method available, from the earliest possible to the definitive confirmation.
Week 6-8: Ramzi Theory (Unproven)
Placenta Position Prediction
Some claim placenta position on an early ultrasound can predict gender. No scientific validation. Not recommended for decision-making.
Week 10: NIPT Blood Test
Earliest Reliable Method
The earliest reliable method. A simple blood draw analyzes fetal DNA. 99%+ accurate. Results take 7-10 days.
Week 10-13: CVS
Chorionic villus sampling can determine gender with 99%+ accuracy. An invasive diagnostic test, not typically done solely for gender.
Week 11-14: Nub Theory (Unproven)
Looks at the genital tubercle angle on ultrasound. Some sonographers won't even guess at this stage. Wait for confirmation.
Week 15-20: Amniocentesis
Can determine gender with 99%+ accuracy. Invasive test with small risk. Only performed when medically indicated.
Week 18-20: Anatomy Ultrasound
Most Common Confirmation
The most common way parents find out. A trained sonographer can identify gender with 95-99% accuracy if the baby cooperates.
Week 20+: Definitely Confirmed
By the 20-week scan, gender can be determined with near certainty. This is when most parents start planning the nursery.
What If the Ultrasound Is Wrong?
While rare (1-5% error rate), ultrasound gender determination can be wrong. Common reasons include:
- Baby’s position: If the baby is curled up or facing away, the genitals may not be visible.
- Early timing: Before 18 weeks, external genitalia may not be fully developed.
- Cord confusion: The umbilical cord can sometimes be mistaken for male anatomy.
- Swollen labia: In female fetuses, labia can temporarily swell, appearing male.
At-Home Gender Tests
Several companies sell at-home blood tests that claim to determine gender as early as 6-8 weeks. These are not FDA-approved and their accuracy varies widely. Some have been found to be no better than chance. If you want early gender results, ask your doctor about clinical NIPT.
Signs You Might Be Wrong
If an early prediction conflicts with a later test, trust the later test. Ultrasound at 20 weeks is more reliable than nub theory at 12 weeks. NIPT at 10 weeks is more reliable than ultrasound at 16 weeks. When in doubt, wait for confirmation.
